[From Within the Photograph] The Weight of Skin
Song Sujeong | Curator
When I first heard Leehaiminsun speak of dissolving ink from photographs, the idea felt deeply unfamiliar. I was accustomed to the tackiness of photographs whose ink had not yet fully dried, or to stains spreading across photographic surfaces with a single drop of water. Yet I had rarely been attentive to the fact that photography begins in a liquid state. Without the material presence of ink, images formed by light through a camera lens could never anchor themselves onto paper.
Leehaiminsun’s sensitivity, however, does not overlook the process by which the images we see move through states of matter—light, liquid, and solid. Thus, in his work, all images of the world, however illusory they may be, are endowed with volume, weight, and texture.
He applies special chemicals to the surfaces of magazine photographs or photographs he has taken and printed himself, dissolving the ink embedded in them. Using this dissolved ink as his material, he then paints entirely different landscapes onto the very paper that once held the original image. In this process, images of glittering urban skyscrapers melt into ink and transform into massive rocky mountains, while winding river landscapes evaporate, leaving behind only grayish dots—like the traces left after a river has dried up. It is as if these works metaphorically suggest that the inner substance of metropolitan high-rise buildings is composed of stones carried from dusty quarries on the city’s outskirts.
Strictly speaking, Leehaiminsun’s works are not photographs. And yet, they repeatedly evoke the sensation of encountering the physical body of photography itself. Perhaps this is because spectacular images are, in truth, nothing more than the surfaces of fantasies we wish to see—or to present. The ink that remains as a mere handful of pigment interrogates the essence of the image concealed behind that illusory world.
